Gospel singer, Sammy Wonder, has called for caution on soap operas and movies, saying that they are bait for human soul from the dark forces.

“Satan wants your soul, so he produces very enticing and appealing movies which just portray people living a carefree life without Jesus Christ, using God’s name in vain, drinking, dressing immorally, and promoting all sorts of things God so much hates and despises,” the singer said on his Facebook page.

“God told me all those ungodly movies, soaps, cartoons, are Satan’s bait for human souls. Is it worth it to exchange your soul for a movie? Nothing on earth can buy the human soul. It took Jesus Christ to pay with a sacrifice of His own life; His blood.”

The Federal Government has pledged to support the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) to enable the creative industry contribute its quota to the growth and development of the economy.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, stated this in Abuja during an audience with the Board members of COSON led by its Chairman Chief Tony Okoroji, who were at the Tafawa Balewa building, Abuja

The organisation had earlier conferred on the Minister COSON award of the year which is the highest honour of the organisation.

Onyeama stressed the importance of the organisation with regards to the development of creative industry in Nigeria.

“I want to really commend the leadership of the organisation and I feel very humbled and honour for the award which shows the importance of intellectual property.

“We are now in the knowledge economy in the world and we have seen how the creative industry has played important role in the economy in major industrialised country.

“And, how it has played more and more important role in Nigeria, its role came to limelight during the rebasing of Nigeria economy where Nigeria became the largest economy in Africa,” he said.

According to him, one of the greatest factors that contributed to that was the creative industry; and it is important because what they do was to collect royalties to pay the artists.

He said that the creative industry had really redefined the country and also rebranded the nation and helped in growing the economy.

“The bulk of Nigeria population is made up of youth so to have an industry that is really creating jobs for the youth and creating a very positive image for the country.

“The industry is also adding to the wealth of the country  which is amazing,” he said.

He however, noted with concern that one of the biggest challenges of the industry was piracy,

Earlier the Chairman of COSON board sough the cooperation of the Federal government in the development of creative industry.

Okoroji said that the organization was trying to work with the Federal Government at different levels and at the level of  foreign affairs  because Nigerian creative products are all over the world.

“The issue is that we are not getting appropriate value for the work and then we need to engage all the stakeholders and others involved in the changing nature of the economy.

“We will engage the Ministry of Information and Tourism, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and all other agencies involved,” he said.

I Go Dye to Buhari: leave when ovation is loud

In his continued campaign against recycling of political leaders, stand-up comedian,

Francis Agoda, aka I Go Dye, who last year, dished former vice President, Atiku Abubakar, following his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has a word for president Muhammadu Buhari over his likely second term bid.

The comedian, a UN youth ambassador, is advocating for a process that will afford the youth the opportunity in political leadership, has advised President Buhari not to seek re-election as being insinuated in some quarters.

The entertainer said he is making “a passionate appeal to his Excellency, President Mohamadu Buhari, not contest the 2019 Presidential elections  and a clarion call to all tradition leaders, Ex-presidents, diplomatic communities  elder statesmen, professional bodies, entertainers and Nigerian youths to lay their voices to end political recycling, because a future bequeathed to Nigerian youths today, will be the best legacy.”

His appeal is coming a day after former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s much publicized letter to Buhari on a similar issue.

I Go Dye who took the President through some of the best moments of his (Buhari) youth, noted that “the youths of today are grieving every day, because so much has been taken away from them.”

“We all have our different birth dates,   yours was in 1942. You joined the Nigerian Army at the age of 19 in 1961.Just three years in military service, Nigerian government sent you and a few others to commonwealth military academy training at Aldershot in England, between 1962- 1963, a testimony of how government cared and protected the youths at that time. At 22 years you were already the platoon commander of the second infantry Battalion. Thereafter, at the age of 25 years,  you were the among the few soldiers that were involved in the counter- coup of 1966, which included your colleagues in service, Abacha 23 years, IBB 25 years and the oldest was Danjuma 28 years and a host of others. In 1975, at 33 years, you were already the Governor of North Eastern States .While in 1976 at 34 years, you were appointed as the minister of petroleum. Meanwhile, two years later, in 1979, I was born into this world; the story has been the same old story, when e go better? In 1983, at the age of 41 years as a sign of displeasure with the Shehu Shagari led civil government, you conquered your fears and risked your life to overthrow the democratic structure at that time, at this young age 41 you became the Head of State. Today you are 75years old, and president of Nigeria, nothing can be found to still be missing, apart from the fact that the youths have not been protected even in your administration.”

He highlighted some of the problems facing the ordinary man to include, electricity, food, shelter, and unemployment.

“Let me recall, previously I wrote you a letter titled: logic and reasons without guns, I spoke on some issues affecting us as a people. If we don’t change our political process, sooner than later, the youths will demand for it, I just pray it’s not too late.”

I go Dye advised the president to consider quitting office and lead the process of advancing and transferring political leadership to the youths in 2019, as there is nothing left for him to conquer.

“I am not against your political ambition, neither  am I opposing your interest but I am of the view that it’s better to leave the stage when the ovation is loud.

Honestly speaking, there is nothing new for you to conquer, the only sacrifice that will bring more honour to your personality, is for you to lead the process of advancing and transferring political leadership to the youths.

“The best gift that you can obviously give to my generation is to activate and set the process of ending the long and over -due political recycling’s that has denied the youths their rightful place in our political history as Nation,” he said.

TV and power of parental control

I am not a strict parent especially when it comes to the television viewing habits of my children because back in the days as kids, we also enjoyed watching interesting local family television programmes like; The Village Headmaster, The New Masquerade, Tales by Moonlight and even Wale Adenuga’s suspense-filled Super Story etc. For foreign content, we also watched TV programmes like Sesame Street, Globetrotters, Captain Cave Man to mention a few.

Today too, the story is not different because whenever I manage to sneak away from the urban hustling lifestyle to spend some time with my kids, I have observed that they, like us back then have a variety of television programmes to watch. From channels like Disney XD, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Cbeebies etc on DStv my kids and many other kids like them can watch several TV programmes.

Unlike in the 80s and early 90s, the world is evolving and topics that were previously taboo are now becoming normal aspects of the society. This development along with various other factors have led parents to try determine what their children view. The concern is made worse because it is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to share quality time with their children and this means they will not always be around to monitor what their children watch.

It is no secret that we learn from what we observe and experience. So if kids continuously watch violent programmes, they may develop predilection for violence, and the same can occur for whatever programme the children get exposed to.

On several occasions, my 7-year-old who has taken it upon himself to be the tell-tale bearer at home has accused his elder brother of switching from their normal cartoon channels to programmes rated above his age grade just out of curiosity. Although I cannot be sure that the programmes are inappropriate, but my constant worry while I am at work and they are home is, just what are these kids up to.

Fortunately, my colleague introduced me to parental control during a discussion about what our kids get up to while we are at work.

All I needed to do was to go to the HELP button on the remote control, click and scroll to the parental control tab and then click OK. The interactive tab brought me to the personalized environment. I then clicked on the Block Channels option and having clicked on the default pin, 1234, I was able to select and block the channels that I didn’t want my kids to gain access to.

Now I am assured that even while away at work, my kids can watch channels only meant for their age range. This is very reassuring.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has inaugurated the planning committee for the 61st Meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation/CAF taking place in Abuja, Nigeria, from June 4th-6th, 2018.

The Minister, who performed the ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, charged members of the committee to ensure the success of the event.

“Today’s inauguration kick-starts our preparation for the hosting of the (UNWTO/CAF Meeting). The task ahead of us is enormous, but with the quality membership of the Planning Committee, we are up to the task and we will host a successful event,’’ he said.

“You have been selected based on your knowledge and expertise in content, logistics and planning. Your role is to execute a successful event with professional inputs and assistance from the Ministry and the UNWTO. I have no doubt that you will take your assignments very seriously,” Alhaji Mohammed said.

The Minister said the hosting right of the event, which was given to Nigeria, has clearly demonstrated the confidence of the CAF member states and the UNWTO in the country.

He said the highlight of Nigeria’s relevance and acceptance by the Organization, within two years of its return after a period of absence, was further shown in his election as a Vice Chairman of the UNWTO General Assembly at an election held during the 22nd session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Chengdu, China, in September 2017.

Alhaji Mohammed said the UNWTO meeting will afford the country the unique opportunity to project its image as a safe and desirable destination for leisure and business as well as promote the country’s tourism products and services.

He said the meeting will also provide a platform for tourism stakeholders to interact with their counterparts from other countries, generate foreign exchange through accommodation in hotels, airfares and souvenirs purchased by foreign delegates, create direct and indirect employment, thereby alleviating poverty, and provide the platform for the training for public and private sector tourism officials.

Membership of the planning committee cuts across the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory, extra-ministerial departments and agencies as well as the private sector.

New lease of life for Toyin Subair

It is harder to find a more poignant modern version of the hero-to-zero tale than the case of Toyin Subair. He is the enterprising dude who emerged from nowhere with indigenous pay TV company, HiTV, which became an overnight sensation and almost sent its major competitor, DSTV, to the morgue. Sadly, the romance was not to last, as the company soon sank without a trace in a sea of debt.

Following the incident, Toyin, who was once the toast of event organisers and blue chip companies, vanished into thin air, leaving broken hearts and out-of-work staff in his wake.

The handsome dude has since resurfaced in London where he is said to be putting the pieces of his life together again. At a time where a new local pay TV outfit, TSTV, has appeared on the scene to a cacophony of controversy, its operators would do well to learn from the tale of Subair and HiTV whose rise and fall were both unexpected and ultimately tragic.

Fuelled by the reputation he has cultivated over many years, UTM boss Julius Rone has finally ascended into the Olympian heights, becoming one of the most sought after. Titans of state with the world at their feet and power to make or mar now seek his friendship while hoping to drink from his deep well of wisdom. That much was evident when Liberia’s new president, George Weah, extended a personal invitation to him and his wife, Utibe, to attend his inauguration.

Julius is cognizant of the wisdom that success alone cannot buy happiness or renown. Hence his devotion to strategic investments in the business world and in humanity, which have over time built up his name to the point where he has become a prophet with honour at home and abroad. Little wonder he has become the beautiful bride for heads of state on the continent.

It is easy to see how George Weah thinks of Julius as one man possessing the Midas touch to help transform his country’s ailing business sector. The boss of UTM Group of Companies was one of the select businessmen the Liberian president invited to his inauguration in the hope that they will invest in the country’s economy.

Classy wedding for Elegushi’s brother

There are two kinds of fame: earned fame and reflected fame. One who is not famous for what he does can still be famous on account of his ties to a famous person. The latter is the case with Abdul Yekini Oyekanmi and Muibat Eniola who leveraged on their blood ties to draw the crème of high society to their high octane traditional engagement a few days ago.

The groom, Oyekanmi, is the son of the late Oba Yekini Adeniyi Elegushi, Kusenla II, and a younger brother of the current monarch of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi. The bride is no slouch either. She is the daughter of the current Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Lagos State, Hon. Saidat Olayinka Oladunjoye.

Like magnets, their respective heritages attracted the movers and shakers to the Harbour Point, Victoria Island venue of the event where Fuji music maestro Wasiu Ayinde Marshall serenaded guests from the bandstand.

Everything at the classy shindig was top notch: from the array of fabulous traditional outfits on display to the unique three-tiered blue cake.

Shina Peller under pressure

Boss of popular Lagos hangout C, Shina Peller, is getting to know the truth in the saying that there is no hiding place for a gold fish, especially a wealthy gold fish that is also loved by the people. He is currently engaged in a game of cat and mouse with members of his constituency in Oyo State, who have been on his heels to contest for an elective office.

The first son of the late popular ventriloquist, Professor Peller, Shina is feeling serious heat from his people in Iseyin, Oyo State. The Aquila Records boss has been told in no uncertain terms that his people are banking on him to bring further glory to their community by running for and capturing an elective post.

The thinking seems to be that Shina, who is much loved on account of his numerous initiatives in Iseyin, would do more if he had access to the huge resources that come with elective office. It remains to be seen if the popular king of night life will buckle under the pressure and succumb to his people’s wish.

While the roads were clear and the flowers were in full bloom, Angela Omokore rode the crest of fame and milked it for all it was worth. She travelled in private jets and wore expensive jewellery. Now the road is strewn with legal hurdles she must jump over. The snow is falling and Angela is left with no choice but to recoil into the warmth of her anonymous cocoon.

Ever since the EFCC beamed its searchlight on alleged shady deals between her husband, Jide Omokore, and former petroleum minister, Diezani Allison-Maduekwe, Angela, has sought refuge in the cloak of anonymity.

The former Zenith and Access Bank top shot was even at one time considered a likely candidate for the CEO of Access Bank. Those heady days now feel like fuzzy dreams for Angela, who is rumoured to have jetted out to a European country for obvious reasons.

Titi Atiku finds her voice

Many heroes are so called because of their never-say-die attitude in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. If they deserve to be celebrated, so also does Hajia Titi Atiku, the wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The dogged woman has been fighting the good but unheralded fight against human trafficking for almost two decades.

Like an intelligent general who adapts his tactics to suit the front lines or the secondary sector, Titi fought when she was in the limelight as wife of the Vice President. And even though her husband has long left office, she keeps fighting away from public consciousness, scoring hits against human trafficking and child slavery.

In celebration of her uncommon bravery and resolve, US-based Africa Informer magazine has chosen her as its Special Guest of Honour and Special Awardee at its 2nd International Women’s Day Conference. She is to be given the accolade of “Africa’s Most Outstanding Woman Leader 2018” in recognition of her efforts through the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Foundation (WOTCLEF).

For Titi, it will be a recognition long overdue for the woman who has helped rescue hundreds of girls from prostitution and modern day slavery on the streets of Rome and other European cities. The august occasion will also see the launch of 18 Years of WOTCLEF: Fighting the Human Trafficking Scourge in Africa, a book that chronicles the battles she has fought and won.

Even though their family backgrounds and territorial issues proved the cog that ruined the wheels of their “happily ever after,” daughter of Esama of Benin Kingdom, Omosede Igbinedion, and the new President of Liberia, George Weah, still share the singular flame that ignited their hearts in sparks of love many moons ago.

Although they could not stay together, they have maintained a close friendship ever since. Little wonder Omosede was in her elements as she celebrated her former flame and best friend’s ascension to the seat of Liberian president. Although she did her people’s bidding and married Benin prince Akenzua, producing a boy in the process, it was obvious that her heart was not in the marriage. Little wonder the union crumbled like a pack of cards barely two years later.

One thing that remained constant was her devotion to George as the two remained in touch even after the latter appeared to have moved on with his own life and ventured into politics. Having finally achieved his dream of ruling Liberia, there was no way Omosede, his first love, was going to miss his inauguration.

The beautiful daughter of Sir Gabriel Igbinedion and her friends were out in full force to show solidarity with George as they were all dressed in expensive royal blue lace as aso ebi (ceremonial uniform).

Femi Otedola demonstrates love for mum

For billionaire owner of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, there is no place like home. And home, to him, is not any of his multi-billion naira mansions scattered around the world or any of his businesses that are raking in millions on a daily basis. Home is the feeble but welcoming arms of his mother within which he can always find warmth and comfort.

Otedola is a “Mummy’s boy” and he is damn proud to be so called. The wealthy head honcho of Forte Oil walking arm in arm with his mother, Lady Doja Otedola, through the family’s Odoragunshin community in Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, is always a sight to behold. It is like the umbilical cord has not been broken as Otedola treats his mum like a fragile piece of rare historical artefact that must be handled with care and treasured beyond words.

Lady Doja, widow of Sir Michael Otedola of blessed memory and first lady of Lagos State in the Third Republic, still treats Femi like a kid, even though he already has adult children of his own. The tie between them is one that transcends age and the vagaries of time and circumstance. Whether it be taking her out for expensive shopping or for overseas vacations or planting a chaste kiss on her lips in a powerful statement of her significance, Otedola certainly knows how to take care of his mum.
