Music, comedy, tributes as Wilson Badejo clocks 70

Stepping into the septuagenarian stage, Rev Wilson Adebogun  Badejo,  did not only dance physically to fiesta of praise songs, his inner man, no doubt, was jazzing literally to the outpouring of encomiums from fans at the occasion.

The celebration of the former General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria and founder/chairman of Wilson Badejo Foundation, at the Banquet Hall of Oriental Hotel, Lagos, recently, was a lesson woven in fanfare. And his old friends: one, from his previous farming business and former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, and former Information Minister, Professor Jerry Gana, were among the high profile guests who spoke about his exceptional qualities.

It was also a night of music and comedy with Demola, a stand-up comedian and Bayo Adesuyi who led the music ministration, but the message for society development, which the celebrant is known for was not lost in the merriment, as Bakare, who described the septuagenarian as a mentor and man of many parts, spoke on the theme: “The cure for extreme poverty and corruption in Nigeria.”

The lecture was not before a welcome address by Senior Pastor of Four Square Gospel Church, Asokoro, Abuja, Rev. Babajide Olowodola, and remarks by Obasanjo, who said he met the celebrant “in a ‘lowly profession’ of rearing chickens.”

Obasanjo who was chairman of the occasion, recalled that he had just left his throne as Nigerian military head of state, and Badejo, a veterinary doctor, was on hand to put him through the poultry business.

Obasanjo disclosed that their friendship spanned the transition of Badejo into a Church Minister, the period of his (Obasanjo) incarceration and demise of his ‘oppressor’, describing the celebrant as a man of God whose vicious prayers saw him through the dark times.

In his lecture at the occasion, Pastor Bakare noted that, “greed, not need, was the cause of corruption in the country.’

The cleric averred that corruption proceeded poverty and the two scourges feed off each other, adding that greed as against need leads to corruption.

He said: “How else does one explain the mysterious billions of naira, millions of dollars and thousands of pounds being unearthed in bizarre locations, including a soak-away pit, an empty apartment, and a cemetery? I understand from budget analyst that the monies traced to the former head of a parastatal could found major hydro and solar power projects, construct major roads and still purchase hundred units of 11kv transformers. That these funds were found idle in their hideouts indicates that they were diverted not to meet the need of the diverters but to serve their greed.”

He added that aside the fact that corruption denies citizens access to resources and opportunities, it encourages laziness, discourages culture of diligence and professionalism.

According to the cleric, seven of the top most violent countries in the world in 2016 were among the top 10 most corrupt countries that year, adding that corruption is closely associated with poverty, failing educational institutions, low standard of living and violence.

Acting president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who sent a congratulatory message to Badejo, described him as a man who has worked and still works diligently in spreading the gospel to various corners of the country and across the world. He also commended the foresight and large-heartedness of the former General Overseer in instituting the Wilson Badejo Foundation, which caters for the poor and vulnerable, amplifying his regular message that the church remains the last hope of the downtrodden.

As he clocks 70, the acting president believes Rev. Badejo’s zeal for serving God will be rekindled, recommending his attributes of self-discipline, unwavering commitment to the truth and love for the poor to younger and upcoming ministers of God and all Nigerians alike.

A documentary at the occasion showed that from his National Youth Service days as resident veterinary doctor at the Obudu Cattle Ranch of Agric Development Corporation, till the point he joined National Veterinary Research Institute, Jos, as research officer, Badejo has always exhibited high level of professionalism. And with a post-graduate degree in Management from the University of Connecticut, Starr, U.S.A, it didn’t take long before he came to limelight.

During his tenure as the General Overseer, the Barley Harvest Project was adopted for the church-planting programme of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. The project involved mega city church planting and strategic engagement of the unreached; over 1, 000 churches were planted in four years. By the end of his tenure in 2009, about 2, 000 churches were planted.

In acknowledgement and appreciation of the grace and call of God in his life, Dr. Badejo and his wife Adeyinka, on May 19, 2007, established the Wilson Badejo Foundation (WBF), a non-profit organisation aims at ensuring that, as much as possible, that no Nigerian citizen is shut out of the nation’s economic system. It provides educational opportunities for indigent citizens in the higher institutions of learning, as well as ensures that no Nigerian citizen sleeps hungry without a meal a day. The organisation also interfaces with the government and other well-meaning Nigerians to empower youth for employment via vocational training and skill acquisition. Over the years, many Nigerians have benefited from the Foundation’s Medical Outreach, which involves free tests, free medication and spiritual counseling.

The gala night was wrapped with the official launch of a book: ‘My Spiritual Odyssey’ – Memoir of Wilson Badejo, with a special toast by Prof. Gana. The former minister of Information described the celebrant as a true friend.

The wife of celebrated comedian and filmmaker, AY, Mabel Makun, has warned Freda Francis, CEO of Oasis Med Spa, to steer clear of her husband.

On Sunday, AY attended a party thrown by Francis and shared a photo of himself and Francis on Instagram, captioning it: ‘At Freda’s Push Party with @kovie1on1… Congratulations@fredafrancis #delsuites #reunion.’

This drew the ire of AY’s wife who retaliated by reposting the picture and warning Francis to leave her family alone.

“I think I have had enough of the ridiculing,” Mabel wrote as she reposted the picture which AY had shared.

“Freda Francis stay away from my family and I mean it.”

Mabel then shared screenshots of flirty Whatsapp chats supposedly between Freda and AY. However, she has since deleted the posts.

Expectedly, the internet was abuzz with the story as both AY and Mabel have not commented further on the issue, drawing speculations on whether AY is the mystery father of Freda’s unborn child.

Recall that in 2016, it was reported that Mabel was said to have left her matrimonial home following a misunderstanding.

No reason was given why Mabel left her home but blogger Stella Dimokokorkus hinted that the “details are too dirty to be posted.”

However, AY later cleared the air that the story was not true and the family had moved out of the house so it could be renovated.

AY and Mabel got married in Lagos on November 29, 2008 and they have a daughter.

Nigeria is set to host the first ever Africa Cinematography Festival.

According to the organisers, the week-long event which comes up in the last quarter of the year in Lagos, Nigeria’s entertainment capital, will feature contemporary issues in filmmaking, networking, business opportunities and the general film economy which have impacted on the works of filmmakers, actors, film marketers, industry professionals, investors, viewers, cinema/studio owners/managers, the organized private sector, government agencies, art councils and funding agencies.

Project Consultant, Sunnie Odafe, disclosed that the aim is to provide a point of convergence for all stakeholders in the film industry spectrum with a view to creating specific platforms that will facilitate professional development for key players through knowledge sharing of trending expertise by renowned and inspiring industry leaders, enable hands-on workshop trainings and interaction with new film-making technologies and promote pitching for film content buyers and media brokers among others.

“The Nigerian filmmaking industry has made tremendous progress, especially in the last decade,” said Odafe who also is the COO of Tasy Yact Media.

“This is however a far cry from what is obtainable in the developed climes. The Africa Cinematography Festival is designed to bridge this gap and make the industry comparatively competitive.

“It is an all-encompassing attempt to reposition the Africa film economy by promoting and providing support for professionalism and innovations while addressing head-on the technical, regulatory and financial ills that have plagued filmmaking in the country through insightful knowledge sharing.”

The festival, he added, will feature conferences and workshops, exhibitions, open film expo, networking opportunities, film pitching, auditions for film roles, film unveiling and promotion, and film production funding.

Deported to have inherited a near comatose regulatory agency, Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Mr. Adedayo Thomas who assumed office in March, has approved the immediate redeployment of top management staff of the agency.

The exercise is coming on the heels of his restructuring strategy which seeks to strengthen the Board’s operations and reposition it for effective service delivery.

Thomas, as attested to by some staff of the agency, is poised to re-launch the NFVCB into the comity of result-oriented regulatory agencies of the Federal Government.

A statement signed by the Director of Administration, Mrs. Fatima Abdulkadir on behalf of the Board’s Executive Director specifies that Barr. Chiedu Okolue, a Director, is to head the Operations Department. He takes over from another Director, Mr. Cornel Agim who now heads the Licensing and Documentation Department.

Others are Mr. Ferdinand Abua, a Deputy Director and Zonal Coordinator who has been moved from Calabar to Bauchi in the same capacity. He takes over from Mr. Eddy Eddion, a Deputy Director, who got the marching order to sanitise the south west zonal office in Lagos, the hub of movie activities in the country. Eddion takes over from Mr. Terry Odey who has been moved to South-South Zone, Calabar.

In the same vein, Mr. Alonge Oyadiran, a deputy director and erstwhile Head of Ibadan Center has been moved to Abuja; Uwaezuoke Elizabeth, also a deputy director, has been moved from South-East Onitsha to Abuja; Ejike Joseph, a deputy director, has been moved from Abuja to Kano; Etuechere Martins, another deputy director now heads the Corporate Affairs section while Barr. Francis Nzekwu is the new head of Legal Services Unit; the erstwhile Head of Legal, Barr. Inwang Effiong is now the Assistant Director (Operations).

Consequently, Thomas warned against laxity among staff members, saying his administration will not tolerate such.

He enjoined management and staff to focus on service delivery and advised them to come up with proposals capable of turning the fortunes of the Board around.

According to him, his policy is geared towards streamlining the movie industry to contribute more to the nation’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), while also creating prosperity for practitioners.

He said the NFVCB under him will collaborate with relevant agencies and governments to drive a prosperous movie industry.

How the Alakijas shook UK with N2b wedding

It was a breathtaking wedding party, as Folarin, son of Chief Folorunso Alakija, got married to his Iranian beauty, Nazanin Jafarian Ghaissarifar, in a lavish ceremony estimated to have cost around five million pounds; about N2billion.

The wedding held at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire over the weekend in the UK.

The groom, a father-of-one, who is in his late 30s is one of the 66-year-old oil tycoon’s four sons.

Known to have lost his first wife to cancer, Folarin tied the knot to his new woman in front of friends, family and celebrities, including Victoria’s Secret Angel, Shanina Shaik.

It was a lavish, no-expense spared, fairy tale affair.

NAN reports that while Folarin makes his money as an entrepreneur, investor and cinematographer, it is his mother who has an estimated fortune of $2.1 billion.

Forbes ranks her as the 14th richest person in Africa but the richest woman in the country. She is number 80 on its global Power Women list and overtook Oprah Winfrey as the richest woman of African descent in the world in 2014.

It is thought the family flew hundreds of close friends and family members over from Nigeria, who were no doubt put up in an expensive hotel for the weekend.

The Woodstock venue, which is the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill, was kitted out with one million white roses, a lavish cake decorated with hundreds of ornate white roses and even hosted pop star Robin Thicke at an estimated cost of £150,000.

Wedding planners believe the venue was exclusively hired at a cost of £150,000 with the bespoke marquee and bespoke marble floor with their initials etched in gold costing around £200,000 on top.

According to the venue’s website, the cost of hiring the whole venue is on application but hiring just the palace and state rooms costs £33,000.

The beautiful flowers were the work of Jeff Leatham, who is known for his elaborate decorating of the Kardashian’s homes.

Bringing over 30 staff members to the UK for the ceremony, Jeff adorned every inch of the venue with copious amounts of roses and white orchids.

Jeff, who can command up to £250,000 for flowers, has worked for Madonna, Oprah and Tina Turner. He was also the man behind the flowers at Eva Longoria and Tony Parker’s wedding.

Guests were also treated to a surprise performance from Blurred Lines singer, Robin Thicke, who reportedly costs around £150,000 to hire and would have been flown over from the US, as well as a magnificent firework display in the hotel grounds later in the evening.

Folarin’s new wife, who is said to have once dated Rob Kardashian, studied Bio-engineering and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Manchester, has a graduate Diploma in Law and has also worked as a model and marketing consultant

Nigeria to assist Niger on digital switchover – Minister

The Federal Government has promised to assist neighbouring Republic of Niger to successfully transit from analogue to digital broadcasting under the Digital Switch Over (DSO) project.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Monday when he hosted visiting Minister of Communication of Niger, Madam Sani Koubra in Abuja.

According to the Minister, Nigeria would make available to Niger, the legal framework for its DSO project, as well as its expertise in the area of signal distribution, Set-Top-Box (STB) manufacturing and content production.

He said the Nigerian government has the political will to make the DSO a success story for the benefit of all Nigerians and to the ECOWAS Community in the areas of the application of the Digital Dividends, despite the challenges.

Mohammed listed the challenges facing the DSO to include the availability and cost of STBs and the Content of Broadcast.

‘’Because of digitization, we now have opportunity for many more channels of programming. When all the technology is in place what are you going to feed your public through all these available channels? The easiest way to colonize the minds of our people is via the Mass Media. If we do not seriously address the issue of Compelling Indigenous Content, we will be exposing our population to further colonization,’’ he said.

Giving an overview of the DSO in Nigeria, he said two Signal Distributors have been licensed – Integrated Television Services Limited from the Transmission Infrastructure of the government-owned NTA and the privately-owned Pinnacle Communications Ltd; that 13 companies have been licensed to manufacture STBs; that a company, INVIEW Ltd, has been contracted to make available a Conditional Access System software for the boxes or decoders while another, CCNL, is the Signal Aggregator.

The Minister told his Nigerien counterpart that Nigeria launched the pilot scheme of the DSO in Jos, Plateau State, 30th April 2016, rolled out in the nation’s capital, Abuja, 22nd December 2016 and will also roll-out in six states in the six geopolitical zones of the country by the end of June 2017.

Speaking earlier, the Nigerien Minister said she was in Nigeria to learn how the country has achieved a huge success in its DSO project, noting that Nigeria is way ahead of other countries in Africa in the analogue-to-digital transition in broadcasting.

Madam Sani said Niger Republic holds Nigeria in high esteem and commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his leadership role in ECOWAS.

Censors Board reconstitutes taskforce on illegal movies

$

It was a heart lifting development for filmmakers who attended the inauguration of a special taskforce, constituted by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to checkmate the upsurge of unlicensed and unclassified movies in the country.

The move was one of the steps taken by the new Executive Director of the NFVCB, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, who assumed office barely three months ago.

The feat, according to many, was a subtle approach to minimize piracy of intellectual property in Nigeria.

Inaugurating the 8-man taskforce at the Ikoyi office of the agency, Thomas said the reconstituted national taskforce against unwholesome movies, was one of the mandates given him by President Muhammadu Buhari “to revitalize the dying dreams of the founding fathers of the film industry, whose shear efforts brought the sector to phenomenal limelight, but have so far recorded pains and tears as a result of the sabotaging works of people bent on crippling the industry.”

Acknowledging that  the Nigerian motion picture industry was built on the sweat and toils of its doyens, and not by government, the NFVCB boss said, “My own responsibility therefore as one of the representatives of the government is to rekindle dashed hopes and fertilize the soil for their seeds to thrive and reap bountiful harvests from their toils and labours in the sector.”

According to Thomas, the entertainment industry in Nigeria is the second largest employer of labour in Nigeria after agricultural sector; estimated to employ over one million Nigerians, hence the policy objectives of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) of the Buhari administration is to increase film production by 15 percent on an annual basis, export videos to generate USD1 billion in foreign exchange by 2020 and improve enforcement of intellectual property rights for artistic works produced in Nigeria.

To achieve this, Thomas said, comes the need to enforce intellectual property rights in the film industry.

“We have therefore selected men and women of impeccable character, cutting across various interests in the industry, thoroughbred professionals who have immensely contributed to the sector, and who know exactly where the shoe pinches,”

Chaired by the NFVCB ED himself, the national taskforce which is headed by veteran filmmaker, Patron/Advisor to the Board, Chief Eddie Ugboma, has as its members, Head of Lagos State Film Censors Board, Mr. Dele Balogun; notable marketer, Igwe Gab Okoye, aka Gabosky; and notable northern Nigerian filmmakers, Hajia Aisha Alilu and Mallam Malik Awah. Others are actor Saint Obi and film marketers Norbert Ajaegbu and Olatunji Ojetola.

According to the ED, the taskforce will work closely with members of the Police, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other relevant agencies to achieve results.

The taskforce is expected to specifically look into issues regarding proliferation of unclassified or unapproved movies, Influx of foreign movies dubbed in indigenous languages, and movie distribution by unlicensed agents.

In their acceptance remarks, the members of the taskforce were unanimous on the need to bring sanity to the film industry.

“I am natural! I did not wear buttocks pad. How gullible can peeps be? Or will I say funny, differentiate the skin from the butt pad. It’s just a see-thru legging,” Okoye posted.

The actress who used to be one of the frequent faces in the movie industry is back on the movie set shooting for both home movies and soaps.

Oge Okoye was born in London. She later moved to live in Lagos with her family. She graduated from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka with a degree in Theatre Arts.

The campaign as reported is a follow up to the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole’s announcement on zero tolerance to tobacco in the country.

The Minister had during the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ announced nine regulations in the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015 to be enforced by the Federal Government.

According to the ministry’s statement, “The Tobacco-Free Nigeria’ campaign, aims to educate Nigerians on the NTC Act 2015 and raise awareness on the dangers of tobacco smoke.

“The campaign will leverage on social media and offline interactions to reach young Nigerians, especially second-hand smokers who need to be aware of the ban of smoking in public places and protect themselves.”

KENNY BLAQ Why I used to dress like Baba Suwe

Otolorin Kehinde Peter, popularly known as Kennyblaq, a.k.a God’s grace ambassador, currently is the reigning king of the comedy industry. With the new style of using music to crack jokes, the comedian, in this interview with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, speaks on how he discovered the new trending style of delivering jokes, among other issues.

WHY music comedy?

I have always been a fan of music. I started as a backup singer with a Yoruba band in 2004.  All I wanted to be was a musician, but then I realised that when I hear a song I always want to sing it the other way round.

So in 2008 I said to myself if I was going to ever do comedy they must know that I can sing too.  That was how I started writing my jokes with music.

Where have you been hiding all the while?

I have been working, and trying to make sure I don’t hide under the shadows for too long. So I have been in my room watching standup comedy shows and going for some local shows.

You see I have not been hiding really; let’s just say I have been working on building the Kennyblaq brand.

And who discovered you?

I will say one of my uncles. His name is Ezekiel, popularly known as P. famous. He saw the gift and gave me my first platform in 2008.

You seem to be the reigning comedian at the moment?

I don’t know about that but if that is true I feel honoured and I give God all the glory.

Tell us how you feel about your success story

I feel blessed. Sometimes when I am alone, I just look back at how I started and all I can say is to thank the Lord for His grace.

I remember when I wanted to go for my first international show last year Easter and I was refused visa, I cried. But today I have performed and also received awards as ‘Comedian of the Year’ in Egypt and Malaysia.

I have also been to the same country I was refused visa more than once. I just finished my Europe tour, and presently in the United States of America for my USA tour. I feel blessed to be God’s grace ambassador.

What was your first experience like on stage?

It was crazy; I didn’t know what to say. Back then I was a clown; I used to dress like Baba Suwe. I was shaking and people were laughing; since it was comedy I turned it to a joke like “omo, the way everybody dey look only me, na him make me dey shake oo. E be like say una won beat me.”  They laughed so hard and that was all I could say but I had fun.

I came back home with joy in my heart and all I was saying for a week was “they laughed.”

How did you feel when three top comedians; Ali Baba, Okey Bakassi and AY came out to introduce you at one of his shows?

Hmmmmm, that I call an experience I will cherish forever. I did not see it coming, it was like a dream because I have never seen them do that to any comedian before.

But I was scared because with that hype I needed to give my best so they can be super proud of me. The audience were waiting after the introduction to see if what they actually said was what was about to happen.

I thank God because not only did the audience give a standing ovation, they sprayed me pounds and dollars too.

Ali Baba, Okey Bakassi and AY, I go dye, Klint the drunk, and all the comedians present at the event, came up to me and said, “Kennyblaq, welcome to your success story page 1.” It is a day I will never forget.

How do you intend to continue to thrill your fans?

It is going to be continuous had work.

Comedians usually recycle jokes; don’t you feel you might run out of ideas later?

I am not God, so I don’t know what will happen later. But for now, ideas come every day, all I need is you to keep praying for me (pray for more grace to do exploit).

Any regrets so far?

All I count is joy presently.

Would you change your style of music, if the need arises?

I am not sure and I don’t have any plan to do so soon.

What do you mean by this statement, “I’m a virgin so I don’t know what s3x is”?

I read it in a book.

Tell us the life of being a twin

Sweet ooooo. Chai, you know you have that someone you can tell anything. My twin sister Otolorin Taiwo Hannah is my second mummy.

Are you thinking of settling down soon?

Haba no ooo, school is there and the brand also still needs to get better and better.

Tell us the concept behind ‘The Oxymoron of Kennyblaq’, slated for July

It is all about comedy but this time it’s going to be musical. You know how I do my thing; I am a story teller, so I am going to be uncovering some stories behind some of the songs you listen to.

How long do you think you can last on stage, with your kind of style?

I think I can do 1hr. I am planning to do that on July 23, at Eko Hotel, for the ‘Oxymoron of Kennyblaq’.

Which would you describe as your worst show?

I learn from every show, good or bad; so I am not sure I have any at the moment.

Are your parents cool with your choice of career?

They are; they see me as a relief to Nigeria in this time of trial.

What are your plans not to fade out with time?

Always put God first, and then work endlessly.
